Part-Time Perks

  • While part-timers are not eligible for full-time benefits, choosing to drive part-time with GBT can be a great source of extra income and also holds your place in line to become a full-time driver. Any full-time driving positions that come up at GBT are offered first to part-time drivers.

General Function:

Support operators and operations to insure effective and efficient transit service is provided throughout our service area. Responsibilities include all functions related to dispatching, supervising operators, both in-house and road, customer service complaints/compliments and encouraging success in all.

This position reports to the Manager of Transportation Operations and Assistant Manager of Transportation Operations.

Position Description:

  1. Opening and closing facilities
  2. Work assignments, operator schedules and bus assignment to operators
  3. Checking in operators and all related activities
  4. On-time pull-out checks
  5. Processing operators booking off and documenting all attendance issues
  6. Monitoring for proper credentials among drivers including valid MEC and CDL
  7. Monitoring ACS and radio communications
  8. Adjusting service (headways as needed)
  9. Provide downtown information clerks with service changes or delays
  10. Providing all applicable information during shift change-overs
  11. Maintaining all on-line data requirements to support service and payroll
  12. Work with customer service to investigate, resolve and determine corrective action if required to customer complaints
  13. Respond to accidents/incidents, investigate and complete supervisors reports
  14. On-street supervision
  15. Point checks
  16. Proper determination of need for post-accident testing under Drug and alcohol testing program
  17. Transport operators and passengers when necessary, including but not limited to drug testing and service related issues.
  18. Documenting work rule or company policy violations
  19. On-Board Operator Performance Evaluation
  20. Process bids and runs including vacation bids.
  21. Other duties as assigned by the Manager of Transportation Operations and Assistant Manager of Transportation Operations.

Position Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED and five (5) years of full-time bus operator experience.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
  • Knowledge of dispatching and supervision.
  • Knowledge of public bus transit operations, the application of policies, procedures, rules, and contractual requirements and the ability to model safe driving and customer service skills.
  • Ability to Effectively meet and communicate with customers and employees. Contact requires courtesy, patience and sound judgment.
  • Ability to operate two-way radio, wheel chair lift and other equipment as required of a bus operator.
  • Thorough ability to plan and schedule alternate bus routes and the assignment of drivers in order to maintain the effective delivery of the bus services.
  • Ability to interpret documents such as rules and regulations related to the transportation industry and GBTs union contract as well as work rules and policies and procedures.
  • Oral and written communication skills which can be clearly articulated and understood are essential, as well as basic computer literacy with the ability to use or learn functions of basic computer programs in use.

Responsible for daily maintenance and upkeep of GBT vehicles as it relates to fueling and cleanliness.

This position reports to the Operations Officer and Foreperson and does not exercise supervision of other staff.

Position Description:

1.  Performs fueling, cleaning, washing, fluid level, greasing, oil changing, routine inspection and “odd jobs.” Performs all assigned duties with safety in mind.

2.  Drives bus slowly through wash rack.

3.  Daily services buses, which includes, but is not limited to checking, draining and replenishing fluids, i.e., oil, transmission, power steering, coolant and takes samples as required.

4.  Looks for and reports defects on equipment.

5.  Insures that interiors are free of dust, dirt, stains and grease by thoroughly cleaning dashboards, drivers’ areas, ceiling vents, windows, doors, damp mops floors, step wells and all hard surfaces.

6.  Insures all areas are clean and clear of any obstruction before bus is backed in.  Also insures that the ears on the front lift are completely in to not damage tires when backing over them.

7.  Operates controls that lift and lower the bus and safety locks.

8.  Inspects and completes shop zone, pre-trip and pm cards.

9.  Other duties as assigned by the Operations Officer and Foreperson

The Mechanic Specialist will perform skilled automotive mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of Greater Bridgeport Transit Authoritys buses, trucks, automobiles, heavy and light equipment both diesel and gasoline powered; and other mechanical equipment.

Maintain proper maintenance and repair records, operate agency vehicles as necessary (non-revenue service,) make road calls as needed, recommend purchase of needed tools and supplies, and perform related tasks as required.

This position reports to the Maintenance Foremen and supervises subordinate level Mechanics.

Position Description:

1. Performs any and all work of repair and replacement on a motor vehicle without requiring direction or supervision.This job requires a skilled craftsman of intelligence and ability capable of adequately servicing all vehicles assigned for work by the Authority, in addition thereto, has extraordinary knowledge and skill in at least one major area of repair and replacement, such as transmissions, engines, bodies, electrical, etc.

2. Advises Foreman on any needed repairs to equipment.Assists in the establishment of priorities for planned maintenance and emergency repairs.Plans and organizes work using repair manuals, diagrams and experience.

3. Inspects, adjusts, repairs and replaces components, parts, and safety devices in GBTA vehicles.

4. Operates vehicles (buses, trucks, automobiles, fork lift) and equipment (including but not limited to bus lifts, floor jacks, tire machines, steam cleaner, sand blaster and parts washer).

5. Uses diagnostic equipment (laptop computer, hand held readers, etc.) to analyze, test, diagnose, and monitor vehicle and equipment functions.

6. Performs preventive maintenance on GBTA vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to, brakes, suspension components, safety systems, electrical systems, engines and transmissions, component overhauls, and bus specific systems (doors, seats, wheelchair lifts, fare-boxes, HVAC), and similar mechanical work.

7. Maintains records of all maintenance activities performed.

Position Requirements:

  • Graduation from high school or its equivalent with at least three (3) years experience in vehicular repair of heavy-duty equipment or buses.Completion of technical/vocational training in vehicular repair courses preferred.
  • Experience with hand held power tools used in the repair of vehicles required.
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude required.
  • Must possess a valid Connecticut drivers license and be able to obtain a Class B license and medical certificate with ninety (90) days of employment.
  • Basic theory and operation of engines, transmissions, brakes, suspensions, electricity, pneumatics and hydraulics, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
