GBT Gets State Funding, Delaying Service Cuts

Community Advocacy and Legislative Support Save Bridgeport Bus Service

Greater Bridgeport Transit (GBT) is pleased to announce that, thanks to the steadfast support of Connecticut state legislators and the passionate advocacy of its riders, GBT has received additional state funding that will allow the agency to delay planned reductions to bus service in the Greater Bridgeport region.

Faced with a significant budget shortfall, GBT had been evaluating service reductions that would have impacted thousands of daily commuters, essential workers, students, and seniors who depend on public bus service as their primary means of transportation. The infusion of state funding, secured through the efforts of the Connecticut General Assembly, provides GBT with the financial relief needed to keep more routes running and protect access to mobility for the communities it serves.

“We are incredibly grateful to our legislators and to every rider who stood up for public transit.”

―Steven DeMichele, GBT CEO

Gratitude to Connecticut’s Legislative Champions

GBT appreciates the members of the Connecticut legislature who championed transit funding and recognized the vital role that public bus service plays in the economic and social fabric of the Greater Bridgeport area. Their dedication to constituents who rely on public transportation made this outcome possible. GBT looks forward to continuing to work alongside its legislative partners to secure the long-term stability of transit funding in Connecticut.

“As a student and a full time hard working individual, a lack of available public transportation will represent a significant setback for my personal growth. The Bridgeport bus service is more than a fundamental part of my commute; without the bus, the daily activities that are currently shaping my future will be significantly impacted.” – Kelvin D. Transit Equity for All.

Riders Showed Up and Made Their Voices Heard

GBT also thanks the many riders who took time out of their busy lives to attend public hearings, contact their representatives, and speak out in support of continued bus service. Your voices were heard. This outcome is a testament to the power of community advocacy — when riders, neighbors, and transit supporters come together, they can make a real difference in the decisions that shape their daily lives.

“While we did not receive all of the funding we had sought, this support has given us the ability to delay the service reductions that would have had a devastating impact on our community.

We know there is more work to be done to secure stable, long-term funding for Greater Bridgeport Transit, and we remain committed to fighting for every route and every rider. The advocacy shown by our community — from the halls of the Capitol to the bus stops of Bridgeport — reminds us every day why this work matters.

Thank you for believing in Greater Bridgeport Transit.”

— Steven DeMichele, CEO, GBT

Looking Ahead

Although the funding received does not fully close GBT’s budget gap, it represents an important step forward and reflects the strength of the transit advocacy community in Connecticut. GBT will continue to work with state and local officials, regional partners, and riders to identify sustainable funding solutions that ensure reliable, affordable bus service for all who depend on it.

“Public buses don't just move people from place to place; they move entire communities toward greater possibility.”

―Steven DeMichele, GBT CEO
